A misty lakeside wedding in the Midlands
Not every wedding day needs blue skies. When Rachel and Conor got married at Glasson Lakehouse, a soft mist hung over Lough Ree all day, and it turned out to be the most beautiful backdrop we could have asked for. Add a couple who could not stop smiling and you get a wedding that looks like a film from the very first frame.
Glasson Lakehouse, Glasson, Athlone, Co. Westmeath
Glasson Lakehouse is a stylish hotel on the shores of Lough Ree, a few minutes from Athlone and right in the middle of Ireland, which makes it easy for guests travelling from every direction. It has its own jetty with rowing boats, a deck over the water and big windows that fill the rooms with lake light.
Pearls, perfume and a dried-flower bouquet
We started with the details: sparkling bow sandals, a string of pearls, a bottle of Jo Malone and the engagement ring resting on leaf-printed stationery. Rachel's bouquet was a gorgeous mix of pampas grass, white fern, baby's breath and gilded leaves. She got ready with her mum beside her, while the flower girls in floral crowns waited patiently with their own little bouquets.
Conor's quiet moment
Conor waited by the window in a grey tweed three-piece suit, calm and smiling, before heading down to greet his guests. A few hugs at the door told us everything about how much this day meant to the people around him.
Portraits on the jetty
Glasson is all about the water, so we went straight down to the jetty with its wooden rowing boats and out onto the deck above Lough Ree. The mist drifting across the lake, the wind catching Rachel's veil and the soft winter light gave every frame a cinematic feel. It proved what we always tell couples: grey Irish weather can be your best friend on camera.
Speeches, hugs and a grand entrance
Inside, the celebrations were warm and loud: hugs during the speeches and Rachel's joyful entrance into the dining room, cheered on by everyone. Our tips for a Glasson Lakehouse wedding: use the jetty and deck for portraits, do not be afraid of mist or cloud, and choose details, like a dried-flower bouquet, that look beautiful in any season.
