A summer wedding by Lough Ree

Shona and Alan's August wedding at Glasson Lakehouse was everything a summer wedding in the midlands should be: a ceremony outside on the lawn, a bridal party in blush pink, lots of happy tears and portraits down by the water. We captured the day in both photographs and film.

Glasson Lakehouse, Athlone, Co. Westmeath

Glasson Lakehouse sits on the shore of Lough Ree, one of the great lakes of the River Shannon, close to the village of Glasson. The house began as the Reid family's period home, later became the Glasson Hotel and Golf Club, and was reopened as Glasson Lakehouse by the Press Up group. Its lawns and golf course roll right down to the lake and its islands.

Details and a quiet moment for the groom

Shona's details hung on an old wooden board: the order of service with their names, a pearl-covered bag, block-heeled sandals and a big satin bow. Alan, in a grey textured tuxedo jacket with black satin lapels and a bow tie, took a quiet moment by the window before heading down to the lawn.

An outdoor ceremony on the lawn

A white aisle runner, wooden benches and cross-back chairs lined the lawn below the house, with white and blush flowers along the way. Shona walked down the aisle with her dad in a lace V-neck gown with beaded cap sleeves and a long veil, carrying blush roses. Her bridesmaids and her bridesman, all in blush pink with gypsophila bouquets, waved, laughed and wiped away a few tears, and the whole lawn applauded the first kiss.

Portraits by the water

After the ceremony we headed across the fairways to the shore, where the reeds of Lough Ree meet the water. The bridal party lifted their bouquets in the air by the lake, a little flower girl with a gypsophila crown wandered the lawn, and then everyone went back up to the lakehouse to celebrate into the night.

Our tips for a Glasson Lakehouse wedding

Hold the ceremony outside in summer, with the indoor option ready just in case. Walk down to the lake for portraits, because it gives you a completely different look from the house. And if you are booking film, add the drone: from the air, the house, the golf course and the islands of Lough Ree look spectacular.
