A courtyard and lakeside wedding in Meath

Claire and Finlay's wedding had a little bit of everything we love: a Scottish kilt, an old stone courtyard, a lake at golden hour and a crowd of friends with sparklers in their hands. Ballymagarvey Village gave them the setting, and they filled it with joy.

Ballymagarvey Village, Balrath, Co. Meath

At the centre of the estate stands a two-storey Georgian house from the middle of the 18th century, once owned by the Osborne family and surrounded by more than 100 acres of parkland. Seven restored stone cottages, old outbuildings and a walled garden form a courtyard around it, and with rooms for the couple and guests on site, it is one of the best-loved exclusive-use wedding venues in Meath.

A quiet morning in the old house

Claire got ready in one of the period rooms, where tall panelled shutters let in soft light from the sash windows. With her hair in a sleek, voluminous ponytail and loose curls, she stepped into an off-the-shoulder gown with a long train and a line of covered buttons down the back. Calm, simple and beautiful.

Kilts, tartan and a stone courtyard

Finlay wore a traditional kilt with a tartan plaid over his shoulder, a silver brooch and a yellow buttonhole. We took the two of them through the old stone gateway, past the cottages and the box hedges, and the courtyard turned out to be the perfect frame for a couple who simply could not stop grinning at each other.

A kiss on the jetty

Down at the lake, Claire's long floral veil spread out across the wooden jetty while a swan drifted past behind them, almost on cue. If you are planning a Ballymagarvey wedding, save twenty minutes for the water in the late afternoon light. It is one of the most romantic corners of the estate, both in photos and on film.

Sparklers under the stars

When night fell, family and friends lined the cobbled courtyard with sparklers and cheered as Claire and Finlay ran through the tunnel of light, stopping halfway for one more kiss. Our tip: hand out the sparklers early and light them all at once, so the whole courtyard glows together.
